Acids…These Strangers!

Acidi…Questi Sconosciuti!

If you've always wondered what type of acid is right for your skin, you've come to the right place. Let's try to clarify things together.

Skin care is important in every season of the year, but in winter, when the sun is less strong, the skin may be more sensitive and require special care.

Acids are widely used in the aesthetic field for their exfoliating and skin-renewing power. However, not all acids are suitable for use in all seasons.

Exfoliating acids are chemicals that smooth the skin, helping it look more beautiful. Don't worry though, because they have a natural origin, as they derive from fruit and are also called AHA (alpha-hydroxy acids) and BHA   (beta-hydroxy acids). You will surely have noticed these acronyms on the labels of some creams, let's explain better what they refer to.

AHAs are water soluble and act mainly on the surface of the skin, making them a good option for treating finer wrinkles, but also for combating dullness and loss of tone . Alpha hydroxy acids are probably the most common acids used in cosmetics and are really useful for exfoliating and stimulating collagen production.

BHAs can penetrate deep into clogged pores and are therefore helpful in treating and preventing acne . Beta hydroxy acids actually bind to sebum, so when we use this type of acid, along with the dead cells we also remove the oil that blocks the pores.

These are some of the most common acids used in cosmetics:

AHA acids:

  • glycolic acid (extracted from sugar cane)
  • lactic acid (deriving from the metabolic process of glycolysis)
  • mandelic acid (extracted from almond)
  • malic acid (extracted from apple)
  • tartaric acid (extracted from grapes)
  • citric acid (extracted from grapes)

BHA acids:

  • salicylic acid (derived from White Willow)

Be careful though, as we have already mentioned, some acids are not suitable for use in summer, such as glycolic acid, which can make the skin more sensitive to UV rays.

Have we helped you a little to extricate yourself from the jungle of acids on the cosmetics market? Let's hope so!

However, here is an example of the acid to use, depending on your skin, which could be an excellent ally in your daily skin care.

If you have skin:
